It is one of the primary goals of Scripps Montessori School to create a "Home Away From Home" that will bring the child closer to his/her community and keep the child close to his/her family.

The Montessori classroom is often referred to as the "Prepared Environment". The teacher has, hopefully, anticipated the child's needs and prepared for them. The materials in the room are child size and there is a place where each of them can be easily found.

The home is certainly the crucial environment for the child and is probably the most difficult to prepare. To Try to duplicate a classroom situation would not only be dull for the child, but impossible for you. Too much school at "home" will cause the child to do less taxing work at school because he needs a rest. Younger children, neighbors, telephone calls, necessary errands and household duties would interfere at home - What can you do ?

We at Scripps Montessori School Recommend:
  1. Having the child's clothes at his level to encourage independence in dressing himself. A Handy attachment to the rod in his closet is available in the notions department of many department stores.
  2. Shelves to hold his toys to encourage putting away carefully. (instead of throwing them into a toy chest)
  3. A child sized table and chair.
  4. Accessible paper, scissors and drawing materials
  5. Accessible cleaning materials (sponges, whisk broom, dust pan, paper towels)
  6. Anticipating the child's needs and planning ahead for his participation and eventual independence.
